OK, I'm a gear geek. My current set up is a
- Nikon D3X
- Nikon28-70 f:2.8 AF-S
- Nikon 80-200 f:2.8 AF-S
- Nikon 200-400 f:4 AF-S
I use a Gitzo 5541 tripod with a Naturescapes plate, having learned the hard way that vibration kills an image more than any other component.
Other equipment I swear by is Really Right Stuff who makes my BH-55 ballhead and mounting plates. You only have to try this equipment once to know it’s exceptionally well made and won’t compromise your efforts.
I've run the gauntlet with bags and packs and currently use a Lowepro harness and belt system that holds the D3X, 80-200, and a bunch of extra stuff without the bulk of a bag. This setup easily goes on airplanes and is flexible enough to fit most anywhere. I also use a Kinesis bag for my tripod and though it doesn’t fit well and is oddly balanced, it gets the job done. All this stuff goes on or under my backpack and yes, it’s heavy, but having the right equipment on site is worth it.
I’m still trying to figure out what to do about the 200-400 bag. The Nikon case is huge and more bulk than is needed to protect this lens. Kinesis makes some larger lens cases but I don’t feel they are as well built as Lowepro. Lowepro doesn’t have a “LC” series case for this lens so I’m on the hunt.
